“This thesis examines the feasibility of operating freight wagons at speeds up to 120 km/h and evaluates the compatibility of the existing rolling stock of a Slovenian national railway company for freight transport-SŽ- tovorni promet and infrastructure with these requirements. The main wagon series and their technical characteristics are presented, followed by an analysis of transported goods in the period 2010–2024, with particular emphasis on intermodal transport. The analysis shows that more than one fifth of railway lines in Slovenia already allow speeds above 120 km/h, around a third of locomotives are capable of such operation, while cars and containers, representing nearly half of the total freight, are especially suitable for higher-speed transport. The greatest limitation lies in the wagon fleet, where the share of suitable wagons remains low, highlighting the need for modernization if Slovenian rail freight transport is to fully exploit its potential and meet European standards.”
