If you want to change the world into more sustainable society, then is the study of a professional programme of transportation engineering the right choice for you!
The professional study programme Transportation and traffic engineering offers knowledge that enables you to solve problems in traffic planning and management as well as mobility in modern cities, countries, public services and companies. In addition, you will learn techniques for planning and dimensioning of traffic infrastructure and predicting future traffic flows. Your knowledge can be used for drawing up total traffic strategies, and analyses in traffic safety. Besides, you can prepare and organize transportation services in passenger and goods transport and carry out technical inspection of vehicles and infrastructure. You can collaborate in preparation of investment programmes in transportation, traffic and mobility, design of strategic traffic and infrastructure projects and preparation of the transport segment for the elaboration of environmental impact assessment.
The study also includes lectures by regular and invited professors from industry, lots of practical work in seminar papers and projects, and numerous excursions.
Enter the world of transportation and traffic engineering and be a part of the solution for a sustainable future!

Scheme of the subject matter
Study programme enrolment conditions and selection criteria at limited enrolment
The enrolment in higher professional degree study programme of Traffic and Transportation Engineering is possible if the student has passed the secondary school leaving examination in any program, vocational matura examination or matura examination.
If only a limited number of students are admitted, the candidates are selected according to:
- general performance in a secondary school leaving examination, vocational matura or matura examination 60 % points,
- general performance in the 3rd and 4th year of the secondary school 40 % points.
Main study programme objectives and general competences of graduates, gained at a study programme
Main study objectives are:
- Education of a graduate who will demonstrate creativity and competition when solving engineering problems.
- Successive inclusion and intermixing of fundamental knowledge in natural sciences and engineering disciplines as well as sociological sciences enable spontaneous transfer to oriented expert know-how and applicative solutions and implementation of the discipline by interdisciplinary and elective courses from the modern fields of transportation engineering.
- The program focuses on practical and innovative solutions of practical problems; the knowledge is acquired by analysis of concrete practical problems, followed by abstraction and implementation of knowledge on generally valid principles and theories.
- Graduates of the proposed programme will be able to understand which duties they can perform independently and correctly. Also, they will be able to formulate the duties that are beyond their knowledge and surpass them to competent experts.
- The study programme provides enough basic general theoretical knowledge, general and specific professional knowledge so that graduates can connect specific knowledge and specialities from the field of transportation engineering
- The modules and elective courses help students to gain specific professional knowledge.
- Practical qualification in industry gives students insight into engineering problems and their solutions and prepare them for independent problem solving.
- Education of proficient graduate who can solve practical engineering problems independently, can communicate and connect activities of the experts from different disciplines.
- Substantial harmonization of the study programme with Bologna Declaration which indirectly provides international comparability and transferability.
- Such a designed programme will provide graduates with basic interdisciplinary theoretical knowledge and broad professional understanding of road and railway transport, which helps them to solve basic problems independently. In addition, they will understand methods and procedures to solve complex duties in transportation engineering and traffic-related fields.
In terms of general competences, students of the 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Transportation Engineering will gain the ability to:
- develop the skills to predict solutions and consequences,
- be able to analyse, synthesize and predict solutions of practical problems,
- be proficient in basic research methods, procedures and processes,
- develop communicational skills in national and international environment,
- use their knowledge in practice, – autonomously execute their professional work, – solve practical problems,
- work in international environment individually or in teams, – develop creativity and innovation as a result of interdisciplinarity of the study.
In terms of general competences, the goals are to educate graduates who can cooperate on national and international level in::
-
- ensuring mobility of population, – planning of transportation system and subsystems, – management of road and railway infrastructure,
- management of traffic and traffic flows,
- planning, organizing and providing transports.
The gained general competences are in line with competences of foreign comparative programmes.
Criteria for completing the study
The study is completed when all obligations, prescribed by the study programmes are fulfilled, and 180 ECTS are collected.
Students can choose between the following elective courses:
- technical English
- technical German
- statistics
- transport systems and exploitation
all of the elective courses are available here
Criteria for transfer between study programmes
According to Criteria for transferring between study programmes, candidates can enroll into:
- the second or third year of the 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Transportation Engineering, if they terminate the education in their first study programme and they proceed study within the same programme of the same degree or enrol into a new study programme of the same degree. They can transfer from the field of civil engineering, architecture, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, informatics and other engineering, natural sciences and mathematical disciplines.
- The enrolment of the higher vocational graduates into the second year of the 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Transportation Engineering is possible from the field of transportation engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and informatics.
The transfer is possible under the following conditions:
- if candidates fulfil conditions for the enrolment into the first year of the 1st degree professionally oriented study programme Transportation Engineering
- if they come from the study programme which provides comparable competences or learning outcomes,
- if at least half of the obligations according the European transfer credit system (hereinafter ECTS) can be recognized from the first study programme that are related to the mandatory courses of the second study programme.Decision about transferring from one study programme into another is made by the relevant committee of the senate from the faculty where the candidate wants to continue the studies
According to the Regulations on knowledge and skill recognition in study programmes of the University of Maribor, the candidates should provide the faculty with:
- application for knowledge and skill recognition at the University of Maribor,
- certificate on completed study obligations (examinations) with grades and number of credits,
- accredited syllabi of the completed courses,
- confirmation about the payment of the procedure.
When transferring from one study programme into another, completed study obligations can be recognized according to the contents, scope and complexity of knowledge in the new programme, also, new obligations are determined which a candidate should complete in order to finish the studies in a new study programme.
Regulations and syllabi provide for each study unit forms of evaluation and assessment. Instantaneous methods of knowledge evaluation and assessment are encouraged, enabling students to control their own study development directly.
Study advancement options
Graduates from higher professional degree study programme are admitted to master’s studies (second degree) according to the requirements established by the faculty offering post-graduate studies.
