» The area in the immediate vicinity of the Holiday (Inn) Hotel at Marijin Dvor in Sarajevo is today spatially fragmented, heavily burdened by traffic, and programmatically impoverished, despite containing one of the city’s key historical and symbolic sites. Three fundamental urban and collective narratives of Sarajevo overlap in this location—the 1984 Olympic Games, the wartime period from 1992 to 1995, and contemporary urban dynamics—yet the existing spatial arrangement fails to connect these layers into a coherent experience. A lack of high-quality public spaces, clear pedestrian connections, and spatial hierarchy has gradually caused the hotel to lose its role as a carrier of collective memory. The proposed design revitalizes the area through the creation of a museum quarter, in which the existing hotel is preserved as an authentic spatial and symbolic element, while a new museum volume is introduced alongside it, conceived as an architecture of memory. The new architectural structure spatially interprets the different historical layers of Sarajevo and translates them into a contemporary architectural expression. The intervention is based on the principle of a subtle spatial dialogue with the existing building: the new spatial layers connect to it without domination, spatially emphasize it, programmatically complement it, and re-activate the broader urban context.«
