»In contemporary society, humanity is confronted with profound challenges, including climate change, environmental degradation, poverty, technological advancements, and numerous others. Within the field of architecture, increasing emphasis is placed on energy efficiency and ecological construction, frequently without sufficient reflection on the processes involved in the production of essential building materials. Although current construction practices are constrained to a limited range of approaches, contemporary technology and improved infrastructure create significant opportunities for the discovery of new methods and the refinement of existing techniques. Such an approach, which fosters an understanding of the complexities of global transformations, simultaneously facilitates the generation of innovative ideas and promotes potential changes aimed at addressing both global and local crises. This master’s thesis is dedicated to exploring the development of earthen architecture within a modern framework, with the objective of educating local communities about the building traditions of their predecessors. The central concept is the preparation of a conceptual design for the renovation of the Čakovec City Library. As libraries have historically served as institutions where individuals sought knowledge, the incorporation of earth-and-straw construction represents a meaningful addition to the renovation of a library located in the heart of Međimurje—a region whose very name signifies “between two rivers,” the Mura and the Drava. This territory, abundant in water and fertile soil, provides a compelling foundation for demonstrating, through this thesis, how ancestral building practices may be reinterpreted to open new directions in the architecture of the future, firmly rooted in the legacy of the past.«
